This weekend, we aren’t cooking up just any old plans. Father’s Day is a momentous occasion that should be spent doting on your number one guy! This Sunday provides the perfect excuse to catch up with your old man and to let him know how much you care. Even if your father can’t be bothered by the gifts and the fuss, you should still go out of your way to make sure he has an awesome day. Looking for inspiration? For the Music Fans: Philadelphia is just one of over 700 cities across the world that will be participating in the third annual Make Music program. Make Music Philly is the city’s only free, “DIY” music festival, showcasing organized concerts and informal performances by professionals and amateurs alike, of all ages and genres. If your dad is a Beatles fan (who’s isn’t?), you might round out the evening with a pair of tickets to see Paul McCartney play at the Wells Fargo Center! This stop on the Out There Tour will be his first visit to Philadelphia in five years. Tickets range from $29.50 to $254.
For the Artsy Dads: Feeling up to a trip to the ‘Yunk? The 26th Annual Manayunk Arts Festival is taking place all weekend, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Take a stroll down historic Main Street and peruse unique fine arts and crafts on display, contributed by nearly 300 artists.
Works will include painting, photography, jewelry, wood sculpture, fiber, glass ceramics, and mixed media art. When you’ve had your fill, retire to The Goat’s Beard or The Couch Tomato Cafe for a beer and some grub.
If you’re Center City-bound, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is hosting a couple of cool events on the 21st. Members are invited on a special Members Tour exploring fathers and sons in the collection, while the public is invited to join in on A Taste and Tour of Beer History: a 90-minute trolley tour helmed by Yards Brewery that explores beer making in early America. Trolleys leave on the half hour between 1 and 3 p.m. and cost $18.
For the Dino-Loving Dads: Check out Adventure Aquarium’s latest exhibition, “Dinosaurs of the Deep”! This exhibit, open for a limited time, focuses on giant, prehistoric monsters of the sea. Explore 5,000 square feet of ancient fossils and interactive activities, plus get up close and personal with over 20 life-sized replicas of these deadly species. “Dinosaurs of the Deep” is included in the General Admission ticket price. The aquarium is also showing National Geographic’s Sea Monsters: The 4D Experience, or you can skip this flick and share a bag of popcorn with your pops while catching a nearby screening of Jurassic World!
