Here’s What’s Going On This Week in Philly…

Monday, June 1

  • Get your brew on at Jose Pistola’s for the Extreme Homebrew Challenge! Judges include Sam Calgione from Dogfish Head brewery and George Hummel from Home Sweet Homebrew brewery, and musical entertainment provided by Trinidelphia is sure to keep the Philly Beer Week party going. The event is from 6 – 10 p.m., and tickets cost $25 and can be purchased at Jose Pistola’s.
  • The Renegade Company and Spirit Forward present Stories and Spirits, a one night literary pop-up cocktail event. Three cocktails will be presented, each inspired by one of three literary classics: Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar, and Orson Welles’ adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. The event is from 7 – 9 p.m., at a location in Point Breeze that will be revealed upon purchasing a ticket for $10 by emailing info@therenegadecompany.org.

Tuesday, June 2

  • Come out to Citizens Bank Park to support the Phillies as they play the Cincinnati Reds. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m. and tickets can be purchased here.
  • Explore the ideas of friendship, urbanism, and literature with Vivian Gornick and her narrative collage The Odd Woman and the City, at the Parkway Central Library on 1901 Vine Street beginning at 7:30 p.m. (for free!). A celebrated journalist and author, Gornick has received praise for synthesizing political ideology and intimately acute interior life, and The Odd Woman and the City will surely be a thought-provoking event you won’t want to miss.

Wednesday, June 3

  • Learn the history about all your favorite Philly foods, like cheesesteaks and pretzels, as well as the 120-year history of the Reading Terminal Market on a 75-minute walking tour at the vibrant Philadelphia landmark every Wednesday and Saturday. The food-writer led tour is from 10 – 11:15 a.m. and will leave from the Market information desk at 12th and Filbert streets. Tickets are $9.95 for children and $16.95 for adults, and can be purchased here.
  • Keep the Philly Beer Week celebrations going at the official beer garden at The Shambles at Headhouse Square at 200 Pine Street. Tonight features brands from Muller Beverage and the list of brewers includes Yards, Round Guys, Stoudts, and more. The event is from 5 – 9 p.m. and is pay-as-you-go.
  • Cheer on the Philadelphia Union at their match against Columbus Crew SC! The match is at 7 p.m. at PPL Park, at One Stadium Drive in Chester, Pennsylvania. Get your tickets here.

Thursday, June 4

  • Celebrate the re-launch of the Dockside Bar at Dave & Buster’s tonight at 7 p.m.! With a new look and the unveiling of an amazing new mural by Philly’s own Alloyius Mcllwaine, the Dockside Bar will be the place to be this summer. Enjoy a night filled with drinking, eating, and dancing to live music and a Happy Hour from 8 – 10 p.m. with half-priced cocktails, $1-off draft beers, and $1-off glasses of wine. Friday, June 5

  • Get a dose of history AND horror at First Friday Movie Night Under the Stars & Stripes at the Betsy Ross House, where you can enjoy a selection of cult horror classics from the 1950s and 60s in the historic courtyard on Fridays starting at 5:30 p.m. The $5 admission price includes the movie screening and a tour of the Betsy Ross House. This Friday’s film is Evil Brain from Outer Space, and tickets can be purchased here.
  • April Melchior, designer and owner of Urban Works Textiles, invites you to celebrate her winning a #GIRLBOSS Foundation grant! Come celebrate her success at an open house at her studio at 2628 Market Street with an open bar, music, and giveaways, and see her new fabric printing process and the release of new designs.   • This Friday marks the world premiere of Charlie Parker’s Yardbird, presented by Opera Philadelphia at 8 p.m. at the Perelman Theater. Saturday, June 6

  • The Inspiration2020 Conference is a must-attend event for people who are or aspire to be an entrepreneur or small-business owner. The conference will help entrepreneurs understand specifically what is needed to have massive success in today’s global economy.   • R5 Productions’ biannual Punk Rock Flea Market returns to the Punk Rock Flea Market Dome this Saturday and Sunday at 461 N. 9th Street. The $3 entry donation is good for both days, and with over 500 vendors – completely different each day – selling old records, clothes, art, food, furniture, and so much more, you’re guaranteed to find something awesome.   • Philadelphia VegFest, presented by the Humane League of Philadelphia, returns for its second year! This celebration of health, sustainability, and compassion encompassed by a vegetarian lifestyle is free and open to the public. Beginning at 11 a.m., the festival will feature live music, food vendors, a cooking demo, and so much more.

Sunday, June 7

  • Need to soak up some of that beer but not quite ready for Philly Beer Week to be over? End PBW with a boozy brunch at South Philadelphia Tap Room at 1509 Mifflin Street. Brunch is from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and features the best draught list of the week!
  • Spend a Sunday at the ball park cheering on the Phillies as they take on the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park. The game starts at 1:35 p.m. and tickets can be purchased here.
