Happy Memorial Day!

Monday, May 25

  • Geek Pride Day is celebrated on May 25th each year in honor of the day the first Star Wars movie was released. Get ready to get your geek on by completing a virtual 5K, for which each participant will receive a Geek Day medal in the mail. $5 of every registration will be donated to Pencils of Promise, an organization that provides kids with the opportunity to receive an education. Tickets cost $18 for participants from the US and $25 for those outside of the US.
  • Welcome spring in typical Swedish fashion at the American Swedish Historical Museum on 1900 Pattison Avenue from 7 – 9 p.m., with a lively bonfire and a performance by the Swedish Museum Singers. Traditional fare of hot dogs, drinks, and dessert will be served. Admission is $15 for adults and $8 for children under 12.

Tuesday, May 26

  • Privacy experts Danielle Keats Citron and Marc Rotenberg offer answers and insights into today’s most critical privacy, data protection, and surveillance with a discussion at the National Constitution Center. A book sale and signing of Rotenberg’s Privacy in the Modern Age: The Search for Solutions will follow the program. Admission is free, and the event begins at 12 p.m.
  • Tickets are now on sale for Irving Berlin’s I Love a Piano at the Walnut Street Theatre. This musical will will make you want to sing, dance, laugh, snuggle a little closer, and shout with joy! The musical follows the journey of a piano as it moves in and out of American lives from the turn of the century to the present. Tickets are $35-40.

Wednesday, May 27

  • Following the release of their new album, No Sound Without Silence, The Script is coming to the Electric Factory with opener Mary Lambert, who was the featured vocalist in Macklemore’s single “Same Love”. Tickets are $40.95, and the show starts at 8 p.m.
  • Find inner tranquility and balance during a one-hour yoga session in the peaceful backdrop of Laurel Hill Cemetery, overlooking the Schuylkill River. Yoga in the Cemetery will occur twice a month, May through September, and each session concludes with light refreshments.  Tickets are $20 to join. Please bring your own mat!
  • The Philadelphia Film Society’s Wedding Season is a cinematic series that toasts saying yes to the dress and celebrates our favorite on-screen moments of matrimony. This week, My Best Friend’s Wedding will be screening at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $10 and $12 if you BYO!

Thursday, May 28

  • Celebrate The 5th Annual Philadelphia International Tango Festival with special guest appearances by Gustavo Naveira and Giselle Anne, the teachers of almost every professional dancer who has come from the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School. The festival will take place at Christ Church Neighborhood House on 20 N. American Street until May 31. Ticket prices vary depending on package/pass.
  • The Arden Theatre Company is currently performing Passion, Stephen Sondheim’s American musical of love and obsession set in 19th Century Italy. Tickets range from $15-$42 and curtain is at 2, 6 or 8 p.m. with option of a post-show discussion depending on the day.
  • Join MenzFit for an elegant and glamorous night of casino games “Mad Men” style, featuring a silent auction, raffle, and live music, to help the lives of local men and their families. This fundraising event will take place at the Pyramid Club from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and tickets are $100 in advance or $125 at the door.

Friday, May 29

  • Come out and support the Phillies as they play the Colorado Rockies at 7 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park! Tickets range from $25-$125.
  • Thespionage Theatre Company presents The Playoffs! A 10-minute play competition with physical challenges and trivia. You choose which team survives! Don’t miss this epic battle of brains, brawn, and theatre. This event is pay-what-you-can for entry, and is a BYOB at The First Unitarian Church at 21st and Chestnut streets.

Saturday, May 30

  • “Future Sensations” is a free, sensory exhibition housed at The Oval on the Parkway from the 30th to June 6th. This immersive experience offers five distinct pavilions that take visitors on a journey of science, storytelling, and art that celebrates the past three and a half centuries – and offers glimpses into future innovations that will transform the world.
  • Philadelphia-natives The Roots typically kick-off the summer music season at the Festival Pier on the Delaware River Waterfront. Now in its eighth year, The Roots Picnic features acts spanning multiple musical genres, and is one of the city’s can’t-miss live music events. There will be an after-party at the Underground Arts on 1200 Callowhill Street.
  • The 7th Annual Great Beer Expo is coming to the Philly Navy Yard! Come sample an incredible variety of beers from the local Philly market, across the U.S., and around the globe. This event endeavors to help raise funds and awareness for the Committee To Benefit The Children. Tickets are $46 for general admission, and the expo runs from 12:30 – 5 p.m.

Sunday, May 31

  • Come and support the 5K Race to Benefit Homes for Our Troops hosted by CertaPro Painters. All funds form this race will be donated to help Homes for Our Troops build a specially adapted home for Army SPC Roberto Reyes, who suffered severe traumatic brain injury and partial paralysis after his vehicle was struck by an explosive device in Baghdad in 2005. The race will kick off at 8:30 a.m. at Heritage Trail in Bala-Cynwyd.
  • The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra celebrates its 75th Annual Festival Concert at the Verizon Hall of The Kimmel Center, featuring music from Tchaikovsky, Mahler, and Seyfried. The performance begins at 3 p.m. Tickets range from $15-$25.
