Hakuna matata: it means no worries, because one of the most popular and acclaimed musicals in the world has stampeded onto the stage at the Academy of Music! Broadway Philadelphia brings Disney’s The Lion King to life with all its breathtaking visuals and unforgettable score, depicting a tale beloved by all generations.

Now in its 18th year, The Lion King continues to enchant audiences on an international scale; spanning 22 global productions played in 19 countries and translated into seven different languages since its November 13, 1997 Broadway premiere. Winning six 1998 Tony Awards, over 70 major art awards, and grossing over $1 billion in North America alone, The Lion King is a must-see musical spectacular that has been seen by over 75 million theatergoers.

Director Julie Taymor, winner of a Tony Award for Best Costume Design for The Lion King, brings the animals of the African Pridelands to the stage. The first female recipient of a Tony Award for Direction of a Musical, Taymor has been supervising new productions of The Lion King the world over, and is bringing her expertise to the production in Philadelphia! With the help of mask and puppet co-designer Michael Curry, Associate Choreographer Marey Griffith, Hair and Makeup Designer Michael Ward, and many others in the show’s creative team, you can expect show-stopping costumes, beautiful choreography, and truly spectacular makeup that will not only entertain but immerse you into Simba’s world.

One of the best parts of a musical is the music, of course, and the captivating rhythms of The Lion King’s score are sure to entertain and delight with a captivating mix of brand new songs – plus all the classics The Lion King fans know by heart. With songs including Oscar-winners “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” “Circle of Life” by Elton John and Tim Rice, and other songs that blend the distinct sounds of African rhythms and popular Western music, this score is truly one the audience will remember for years to come.

Disney’s The Lion King will only be here for a limited four-week engagement through June 14, so make sure to get your tickets. Follow @kimmelcenter on Twitter for all things theater, and tag @TheLionKing and #thelionking when you post!
