Snapchat’s Newest Feature: Discover

On January 27, Snapchat introduced a new, creative way to explore Stories and catch up on the latest news from select media outlets producing content as fast as possible. This content, called “editions,” can be found in Snapchat’s newest feature, Discover.

Discover includes photos, videos, long form layouts, and advertising which are all updated to a new edition after 24 hours so that news stories and information are constantly flowing. The 11 media companies who connect with Snapchat users are CNN, Comedy Central, Cosmopolitan, Daily Mail, ESPN, Food Network, National Geographic, People, Vice, Yahoo! News, and Warner Music Group. Each media picks six or seven stories to be told in a storytelling format featured in the given edition.

Editions within Discover range in video length from under a minute to over 15 minutes. There is an emphasis on sharing a story via putting the narrative first with a clear beginning, middle, and end. There are no links to external sites and no waiting for content to load, unlike with media and other websites. Discover is quick, easy and provides brands on Snapchat with new advertising opportunities.

The Snapchat team explains Discover is not a social media outlet: “Social media companies tell us what to read based on what’s most recent or most popular. We see it differently. We count on editors and artists, not clicks and shares, to determine what’s important.”

Wondering how to you use this awesome new Snapchat feature? It’s simple. Once you open the Snapchat app, click on the bottom right square, then the top right purple circle, and choose the edition of your choice! Swipe left to browse Snaps, or swipe up on a Snap for additional stories. Snapchat Discover is only available to users after updating the latest version of Snapchat on their mobile device.
