Though the liquor laws are strict in Pennsylvania, one of the best things to come from it is the abundance of BYOB restaurants in Philadelphia. Nestled in the heart of Center City on S. 19th Street is Matyson BYOB, an intimate restaurant with modern American fare. Even with a group of 7, the staff was accommodating and service was good on the particular weeknight that we visited.

Our evening started indulgently with foie gras and sweetbreads for appetizers. They were both rich and bursting with hearty flavors. For entrees, the whole table was pleasantly satisfied with their choices. The rack of lamb was cooked a tender medium-rare, plated with a mustard sauce. The duck was exceptionally flavorful with its Asian-influenced hoisin/XO sauce. The scallops were a nicely balanced option, nicely paired with the light riesling that we brought along.

Luckily everything was appropriately sized, meaning there was still room for dessert. The peach and blackberry crisp was topped with a ginger ice cream that brings out the best flavors of the season. The dulce de leche napoleon was a highlight of the night; the pastry was delectably rich and creamy with its layers of banana pecan sauce and whipped cream topping. It was a perfect note to end the night on.

Visit Matyson’s website for an up-to-date menu. One of their special features is a 5-course $45 prix fixe tasting menu, with exciting rotating themes like “smoked foods” and “lobster around the world.”  Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest information.
