Monday, January 20th

  • GroundSwell 1-Year Anniversary & MLK Jr. Celebration – Party with the GroundSwell team on the celebration of their first anniversary and Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the RUBA Club with a performance by the Bearded Ladies Cabaret, drinks and light fare. Tickets are $25, and a $20 upgrade will give you a Contributing Membership.
  • MLK Tribute Concert – The Philadelphia Orchestra’s 24th annual tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. is a free concert, taking place at the Girard College Chapel at 1:30 pm. Volunteers will be collecting new school supplies in support of the King Day of Service signature project. Reserve your space ahead of time!

Tuesday, January 21st

  • Art in City Hall Presents Eco + Fashion – Explore an exhibition whose designs address the issues of sustainability and eco-consciousness through fashion and wearable art. This free showcase at City Hall presents artwork, garments and designs created from sustainable materials. Open now through February 28th.
  • A Whiskey History with Dad’s Hat Rye – One of our amazing whiskey sponsors is holding a discussion with founder Herman Mihalich, to speak about the history of whiskey and the role that Dad’s Hat distillery played in the whiskey revival of post-prohibition America. Registration is required for this free program at the Margaret R. Grundy Memorial Library in Bristol, PA.

Wednesday, January 22nd

  • Due North – Philagrafika presents a space in conjunction with Icelandair and Iceland Naturally that brings about a visceral look at Iceland in the wintertime from an outsider’s perspective. Where everything is raw and wild, ancient and intimate, experience a sense of mystery and stillness in this stunning exhibit at the Icebox Project Space, for free, until January 25.
  • Portraits of the Human Spirit – National Geographic photographer Alison Wright presents some of the most iconic images taken throughout her world travels in photographing endangered cultures at the Ritz East Theater. Showtimes are at 2 pm and 7 pm on Wednesday only, and include a book signing. Tickets are $20 general admission, and $17 for members of the Geographical Society of Philadelphia.

Thursday, January 23rd

  • Young Friends of the PMA and Art Alliance Happy Hour – Join the friends and members of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Art Alliance from 6 to 8 pm at Opa and find out more about all that these two organizations accomplish in the City of Brotherly Love!
  • Rock On Philly: Forget Your Resolution Party – Celebrate the new year at Milkboy in Center City with a performance upstairs featuring local indie-alt rock band Dayseam and Jazz/Blues/Rock group Memphis Hat. Tickets are $8 to 10 and the show begins at 8 pm.

Friday, January 24th

  • Magic Ladders Opening Night – The Barnes Foundation’s newest exhibition features artist Yinka Shonibare MBE, a British artist of Nigerian descent. Her work, Magic Ladders, critiques colonialism and racial identity by using Dutch wax fabric sculptures that speak to the empowerment that comes through education. The opening party is from 6 to 9 pm, and tickets are $25.
  • JUMP Winter Issue Launch Party – Celebrate the release of JUMP Magazine’s winter issue, featuring coverwoman and local singer Ali Wadsworth, and Vinnie Paz of Jedi Mind Tricks. Admission is free, and includes an acoustic set with Satellite Hearts at 7, as well as drink specials and $1.50 tacos from 5 to 8 pm.

Saturday, January 25th

  • BarLy’s Beer Festival – From noon until 4 pm, imbibe in selections from 12 different breweries, featuring 24 brews from Dog Fish Head, Six Points, Weyerbacher, Flying Fish and more. Beer reps will be on hand to educate about the different drinks and complimentary apps will be served. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.
  • Taste For Travel – The Philadelphia Inquirer’s travel show takes a culinary trip around the globe at the Valley Forge Casino. There will be food sampling from Philadelphia’s premier restaurants, a Mid-Atlantic craft beer pavilion showcasing craft breweries from around the region, as well as the Queen Appliance Culinary Stage, where attendees can view demonstrations from top chefs, pitmasters, and culinary authorities.
  • 104.5 Winter Jam – Brave the cold at the Piazza at Schmidt’s for radio 104.5’s annual free winter jam show. This year’s lineup includes twenty one pilots, Switchfoot, New Politics, and Ms Mr, from noon through 5 pm.

Sunday, January 26th

  • 5th Annual Beef and Beer – South Philadelphia Tap Room hosts an all-you-can-drink beef and fixin’s dinner from 4 to 8 pm. For $75 (plus tax and tip, of $45 for designated driver tickets), enjoy sides and plates like beef short rib tacos, beef tartare, and whole roasted NY strip steak. There will be a variety of firkins as well, including an exclusive Founders beer.
  • Chinatown Flower Market – Bring in the Chinese New Year with an open air market on 10th and Vine offering gifts, candy, lanterns and flowers for sale from vendors including China Art Company, Flower Expressions, On Lok House, the Philadelphia Suns, and more. Open from 10 am through 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
  • 12th Annual Antique Toy Train Show – All aboard! The South Jersey Museum of American History’s yearly exhibit of O and O-27 gauge toy trains from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s will be open through February 2nd. Check out Plasticville buildings from the 50’s as well as racing Lionel and Marx engines from 1 to 5 pm from Thursday to Sunday. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for children.
