Here are our top events happening this week in Philly!

Monday, January 13th

  • Science on Tap – What’s the matter with the Higgs Boson? Physics Professor at Drexel University Dave Goldberg gives a half hour primer on the Higgs Boson: how it works, what it means for a particle to “create mass”, and enough knowledge to impress guests at cocktail parties. Starts at 6 pm at National Mechanics, for 21+.
  • Sound All Around – Let your children explore music and instruments up close and personal, at the Academy of Music on Mondays and Saturdays. Listen to stories with music, sing, dance, and examine instruments up close with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra and award-winning storyteller Charlotte Blake Alston. Concerts are 45-minutes long, and tickets can be purchased here.

Tuesday, January 14th

  • Late Night Happy Hour at Strangelove’s – 9-5’ers shouldn’t have all the fun. Come hang out with working professionals from Midtown and Center City after the late shift or class and enjoy American drafts, house wine, well drinks, and apps, all for $4. From 9 to midnight every Tuesday night at Strangelove’s!
  • Advocacy 101: Effective Issue Campaigns – Join in this interactive session from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm that teaches how to influence policy through direct advocacy and campaign strategy. You will learn all about basic campaign planning, strategy development, and the best tactics to implement change. Guests will then participate in a mock lobbying game to put their skills to the test!

Wednesday, January 15th

  • Paul Bunyan Night – Come dressed in your greatest lumberjack costume for the 5th annual all-grunge party at the Irish Pol! There promises to be tons of beer, pancakes, and prizes. Starting at 5 pm at 45 S 3rd Street. Bring your flannel, but leave your axe at home.
  • Nicole Miller Semi-Annual Sale – For the rest of the month of January, enjoy 50-75% off of select styles from the Nicole Miller collection. Her shop is headquartered in the Bellevue on 200 South Broad Street. See what new arrivals to expect at the online store.
  • Tu B’shvat At Zahav – Celebrate the Jewish Arbor Day, also known as the New Year for Trees, with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society at Zahav, from 6 to 8 pm. This $180 dinner includes a wine and tasting menu by chef Michael Solomonov, and features the Seven Species that are traditionally consumed on the holiday: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates.

Thursday, January 16th

  • The Disappearing Quarterback – Former Eagles QB Mike Boryla played from 1974 to 1976 in Philly and in the 77-78 seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before quitting the sport and escaping the attention of the media. After 35 years, he returns to the Plays and Players Theatre for a one-man show about his experience walking away from the career the he loved, and the future of America’s favorite past time.
  • RuPaul’s Drag Race: Battle of the Seasons – Michelle Visage hosts this epic battle at the Trocadero, featuring Sharon Needles, Ivy Winters, Pandora Boxx, Phi Phi O’Hara, and more. Event starts at 9 pm, and tickets are $29.50 general admission, and $75 for VIP. 21+ only.

Friday, January 17th

  • Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal – This prominent “feel-good company” features neither jazz or ballet, but a unique fusion of the two art forms with technically stunning choreography; cool, athletic and refined. Their four night engagement at the Annenberg Center includes the Philadelphia premiere of 3 new works: the dark comedy “Harry”, a pas de deux by “Black Swan” choreographer, “Closer,” and “Fuel”, a piece about the modern industrial revolution.
  • Memoirs of a Secretary at War – Former U.S. Secretary of Defense and 2011 Liberty Medal recipient Robert M. Gates visits the Constitution Center to speak about his latest book. His memoir serves as an account of his role of secretary of state under Bush and Obama, which spanned the War on Terror, national security, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the capture of Osama Bin Laden. Tickets are $15-35

Saturday, January 18th

  • Hair O’ The Dog – The 20th annual Gatsby-inspired black tie affair is back! Step into your zoot suit and grab a vintage whiskey or gin cocktail for this year’s gala at the Sheraton Center City with a DJ set and live performance by Havana Brown. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Claddagh Fund.
  • Skippack Winetober Fest – Guests of the Winter Wine Festival will enjoy a range of food and wine samples and live music at the Skippack Village Shops from 1 to 6 pm. The shops will be filled with local foods and wine samples from some of Pennsylvania’s best wineries. Tickets are $25 per person. Skippack Village Shops will host multiple venues throughout the Village for the wineries.
  • Breakfast Boot Camp – Join Erica Landes’ in a boot camp-style fitness class at the Market and Shops at the Comcast Center. Receive a total-body workout and plenty of cardio for a $10 fee that includes a $10 voucher to the shops for a post-workout breakfast.

Sunday, January 19th

  • PAN Vegan Pledge – If your New Years Resolutions included converting to veganism, The Rotunda is hosting the perfect program to help. Join the Vegan Pledge in Philly for a 30-day challenge whose meetings include cooking demos, Q&As, lectures, and more. The program begins on the 19th, with 5 meetings scheduled throughout the series.
  • Other Desert Cities – Drama ensues when a promising novelist returns home in Palm Springs for Christmas after a 6-year absence, announcing the publication of a memoir that will expose her family’s tumultuous history. The Walnut Street Theatre’s 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning play is hilarious and thrilling, and runs from January 14 through March 2nd.
  • Five-Minute Follies – Previous resident at the Trump Plaza and Show Boat Casinos in Atlantic City (and recurring guest on “My Super Sweet Sixteen”), award-winning magician Anthony Salazar headlines this variety show at the Adrienne Theatre at 20th and Sansom. Other openers include comedians, tap dancers, flow artists and singers. Tickets are $15.
