Here’s whats going on this week…

Monday, December 16th

  • Monday Movie Night at the Troc – Despicable Me 2! $3 gets you in and goes toward a drink or snack.
  • As American as Shoofly Pie – The Penn Bookstore hosts a free book signing with William Woys Weaver, food historian and cookbook writer, in promotion of his new book “As American as Shoofly Pie: The Foodlore and Fakelore of Pennsylvania Dutch Cuisine”. The event runs from 6 to 7 pm.
  • Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom – View an advanced screening of this biographical film, featuring acclaimed performances by Idris Elba and Naomie Harris. Love to Langa is showing the film at United Artists Main Street 6 movie theater in Manayunk. Tickets are $25, a portion of which will be donated to Love to Langa, a US-based 501(c)(3) charity that builds schools and supports education programs for orphans and children living in poverty in South Africa.

Tuesday, December 17th

  • Aladdin and Other Enchanting Tales – The Enchantment Theatre Company delights audiences with the magical stories of Sinbad, Aladdin and the Kalandar Prince with actors and dancers, stunning costumes and puppets. December 17th through 30th at the Arts Bank Center.
  • The Erotic Literary Saloon – Every third Tuesday of the month, join Susana Mayer, Ph.D.  for discussions and readings on subjects related to sexuality and erotica. She is oftentimes accompanied by Resident Nonagenarian, a 96-year-young woman who often reads her spicy erotica. Tickets are $10 general admission at The Bohemian Absinthe Lounge in Time.

Wednesday, December 18th

  • Hope Chest Holiday Soiree – Come out for light bites and complimentary drinks and browse the Hope Chest boutique’s collection of naughty and nice lingerie for the holiday season! Save on merchandise and browse a trunk show by Simone Perele, leading manufacturer of fine French lingerie. The event supports Free the Girls, a non-profit organization which provides aid for women rescued from sex trafficking, as they will be accepting donations of gently used bras. RSVP here!
  • Drake: Would You Like a Tour – Drake and Miguel return to the Wells Fargo Center for a show at 7 pm. Tickets run $59.75 – $109.75, with VIP packages available.

Thursday, December 19th

  • Brew & Chew – Cavanaugh’s Headhouse features a select of four different Weyerbacher beers, including Winter Ale, Merry Monks, Last Chance IPA, and Old Heathen. Sample beers paired with a special appetizer between 8 and 10 pm, and tickets are $25 for an open bar – RSVP required.
  • Philebrity Awards and Xmas Pageant – Johnny Brenda’s hosts Philadelphia’s annual awards honoring individuals, businesses and organizations in the Greater Philadelphia area. Vote online and see who is crowned as winner in a holiday awards show featuring some of the city’s greatest musical acts. Festivities start at 9 pm!

Friday, December 20th

  • Rock On Philly Holiday Jam at Milkboy Philly with Daddy Long Legs, Satellite Hearts, The Silent Signals, and Laura Cheadle.  Show starts at 8:30pm.
  • The  Peek-A-Boo Revue Holiday Tease-A-Thon at the Troc!
  • DC4V (Drum Circle, for Veterans!) – Bring a percussion instrument, chairs, blankets, hydration and hats and join in The Independence Drum School’s drum circle. $5 general admission, free for veterans and active duty. Event goes on in rain or shine!
  • Family Style Open Mic Night – Michelle Myers hosts the Asian Arts Initiative’s monthly open mic series. Be a part of this open dialogue which includes Sri Lankan poetry to Filipino hip-hop with an eclectic mix of multi-disciplinary performance and storytelling. Doors open at 7 and the show starts at 7:30 with a $5-10 sliding donation at the door.

Saturday, December 21st

  • The Philadelphia Independent Craft Market’s 7th Annual Holiday Show at the Crane Arts Building.   For a $2 admission you can get some food and beer while you shop and listen to live music.  Sounds food to us!
  • First Annual Manayunk Winter Solstice – Celebrate the arrival of the Winter Solstice at Canal View Park from 3 to 6 pm! Visitors get up close and personal with a variety of local birds during the Birds of Prey Show, watch a ceremonious drum circle while torch lights are lit, and make wishes on wishing sticks for the new year. RSVP here.
  • Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s “The Lost Christmas Eve” – The most popular rock show of the winter season comes to Philadelphia with two performances at 3 pm and 8 pm. Hear the story of Christmas as you never have before, with this annual light show and rock opera at the Wells Fargo Center. Tickets are $40-70.
  • Glorious Sound of Christmas – The Philadelphia Orchestra showcases its best-selling Christmas album, just in time for the holidays! Featuring Conductor Sarah Hicks, who made 2011’s performance so memorable. Showtimes are at 7 pm on December 19th through 21st, and tickets run from $35 to $105.

Sunday, December 22nd

  • The Jewbadours – New Yorkers Ariel Hammerstein and Yakob Veivelman are world travelers who entertain with post-disco, pre-new wave music. Their show at the World Cafe Live will include awesome melodies and harmonies, acoustic guitars and fender rhodes piano, as well as all things Jewish. Doors open at 7, and tickets are $15.
  • Santa Paws Adoption Event – The Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT) hosts its third annual Santa Paws event, featuring discounted adoptions and pet photos with Santa. Find your new best friend for the holidays, and take a picture with Santa for only $5. Adoption hours are 10 am to 5 pm, and photos are from 11 am to 3 pm.
  • Peddler’s Village Annual Gingerbread Competition – Come out and see the unbelievable detail and craftsmanship of these gingerbread buildings, on display in the Village Gazebo at Peddler’s Village. Over $4,000 in cash prizes were awarded to the winners in six different categories. Open now through January 4 during regular shopping hours.
