This Week in Philly

It’s a short week for most of us, but that does not mean a lack of events…check out everything going on this week in Philly!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Monday, November 25th

  • Pie in the Sky 2013 – Buy a pie and feed a family at MANNA’s annual Thanksgiving fundraiser, which allows the community to come together and nourish our neighbors who battle life-threatening illness during the holidays.  Online sales are now closed but if  you would still like to purchase a pie, you can visit one of six cash and carry sites on Tuesday or Wednesday of this week!
  •  Wine Down Mondays – Perfect for this time of year, “wine down” at the Victoria Freehouse with half priced bottles and glasses of wine from 4 through 7 pm. Pair your drink with authentic British fare from this Old City eatery.
Tuesday, November 26th
  • Thanksgiving Market Days at Greensgrow Farms – On Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 6 pm, check out Greensgrow’s specialty holiday stand filled with all of the produce you’ll need for Turkey Day!
  •  Electrical Spectacle: A Holiday Light Show – Enjoy a brand-new holiday nighttime light show in Franklin Square throughout the season! The show will play every day throughDecember 31st, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas, from 4:30 through 8 pm.
  •  Beauty and the Beast – With the family all together this week, take your loved ones to see Disney’s magical live performance of Beauty and the Beast at the Kimmel Center. Playing from the 26th through December 1st, tickets range from $20-115.
  • The BoomBox Collective Holiday Throwdown at World Cafe Live!

Wednesday, November 27th

  •  Jive Turkey at Trestle Inn – Enjoy Wild Turkey Specials all night long at the Trestle Inn, from 7 pm through 2 am. Argo & Lexx will be spinning deep funk with Trestle Specials Miss Scarlett Fever and Bella Tricks. The evening features Thanks-A-Latke, with chilled Boyd & Blair Potato Vodka and a screening of The Hebrew Hammer.
  •  Black Wednesday Party – Kick off the holidays with lots of drinks, and lots of throwback tunes at Howl at the Moon! The newest dueling piano bar on 15th Street is offering free admission to anyone with college ID, and $3 Shock Tops, $4 Skyy and flavors, $5 American Honey shots, and $15 86 oz. Awesome Sauce Buckets (you’ll have to let us know what those are)!
  •  Chocolate Beer Night – Enjoy some sudsy sweets at Bainbridge Street Barrel Housebefore feasting this Thanksgiving! Stop by between 4 pm and 1 am to get out of the cold and sample some delicious chocolate-y stouts and craft beers.
  •  Groove Philly Thanksgiving Eve – The team from recently closed Sisters Nightclub is pitching in to help throw the biggest party of the year at Voyeur Nightclub, with 3 DJs, 2 dance floors, plenty of hot dancers and $3 drinks and bottled beer. Admission is $10 at the door.
  •  Chanukah at Zahav – Celebrate the holidays with a specially crafted Chanukah menu, offered for one night only. For $39 per person, enjoy delectable dishes including hummus with braised brisket and sunflower seeds, honey-baked lamb, turkey shisklik, and fried challah doughnuts. Make your reservation now!
  •  2nd Annual Thanksgiving Eve Party – Six parties, a three hour open bar and over 50 craft beers to choose from guarantees a wild night at Xfinity Live! They’ll be hosting a battle of the bands, DJ mashup, a seasonal craft beer garden, contests and more. Tickets are $5 for groups, and $10-60.
Thursday, November 28th – Happy Thanksgiving! 
  • Christmas Village in Philadelphia – Peruse artisan crafts and unique products in Philly’s annual Christmas Village at City Hall, opening on Thanksgiving Day through January 1st. The village will be open with free admission from 11 to 7 on weeknights and until 8 pmon the weekends. Check out these special scheduled events with local vendors, including Honeybee’s workshop and a meet and greet with Santa Claus.
  •  The Comcast Spectacular 2013 – Philadelphia’s favorite 15-minute holiday show also debuts on Thanksgiving on the Comcast Experience video wall at the Comcast Centre. The Spectacular includes scenes from Olympic-caliber ice skaters, as well as performers from the Walnut Street Theatre. The show runs from 10 am through 5 pm on weekdays and 8 pm on weekends, every hour on the hour.
Friday, November 29th – Black Friday
  • Waterfront Winterfest opening – Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Blue Cross RiverRink, the designers behind the PHS Pop-Up Garden are sculpting a winter wonderland for the season, complete with a craft market, light show, and winter Lodge, the largest public plaza to ever be created exclusively from recycled shipping containers. George Sabatino has prepared a menu of perfect cold-weather eats, including smoked turkey legs, mashed potato fritters, chocolate-covered popcorn and caramel apples, complete with a list of seasonal craft beers on tap, cider, spiked chai tea, and hot cocoa.
  •  Flyers vs. Jets – Start your Black Friday off right with a discounted seat at the Flyers’ home game vs. Winnipeg Jets, beginning at 11:30 am. Tickets are $10 or $25.
  •  The 27th Annual Thanksgiving ‘Not Just’ Rock Expo 2013 – The Greater Philadelphia Center in Oaks, PA will be filled with vendors offering tables full of records, CDs, 45s, posters, magazines, books, t-shirts, and memorabilia. Bring a canned good or two to donate to new partners, rock CAN roll, inc., a non-profit organization that provides hunger relief. Print out the webpage to get $10 off of pre-show admission.
Saturday, November 30th  – Small Business Saturday 
  • Skate at The Piazza – Northern Liberties’ entertainment and apartment complex is creating a rink with artificial ice, open to the public from the 30th through February 23rd. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids with $1 skate rentals. Keep an eye on their website for upcoming events including screenings of the Olympics and movies, live DJs, a winter market, and weeknight curling league.
  •  Small Business Saturday – Shop along Main Street in Manayunk and take in the holiday spirit with carolers, crafts, raffles, music from B101, pictures with Santa, and more. From11 to 5 pm.
  •  Fashion Funk Night – Take a break from the shopping mall and check out these fashions with a strong funk influence at INE Studios at 8 N Preston Street. There will be unique items to purchase from numerous local designers, including Mico’s Jewelry Box, Eno Adore and The A List Look. And what’s a funk night without some live music? 5 live performers and 3 DJs are scheduled to make for a great evening. Buy your $15 tickets today!

Sunday, December 1st
  • New Hope Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony – From 5 to 6 pm, school and community choral groups will perform outside at Cannon Square on Ferry Street in New Hope, before Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrive via horse drawn buggy. Light refreshments and cookies will be available for attendants, and children can visit with Santa after the 35-foot Norway spruce is lit with a 15 minute show set to holiday music.
  •  One Day in Pompeii – Get out of the cold on a trip to The Franklin Institute to see their newest exhibition all about the notorious volcano that preserved an entire city in ashes. View over 150 artifacts, including frescos, sculptures, jewelry, and full body casts of the volcano’s victims.
  •  Santa Through the Ages – The Bellevue‘s annual holiday display is open now throughJanuary 5th, with six life-size Santas representing the Victorian Father Christmas, German Kriss Kringle, Medieval Santa, Finnish Old Man Christmas, French Pere Noel and Russian St. Nicholas.
