Here’s our “must attend” event for the week:

Monday, October 7th

  • “A Koenitzer Affair” Closing Reception – Father-daughter artists Gary, Dana, and Nicole Koenitzer’s artwork represents three individualized aesthetics using aluminum paint, photography, and painting with fundamentals in web design and computer programming. Catch the exhibit on its last day with a closing reception with wine and refreshments from 6 to 9 pm at the James Oliver Gallery.
  • Meditation with Studio34 Yoga – The Amitayus Buddhist Center is offering a class titled “Fall into Inner Peace: Using Meditation to Perfect the Art of Happiness”, running from the 7th to November 25th for $8 per class. Drop-ins are welcome.

Tuesday, October 8th

  • What a Way to Go! Strange Exits and Freakish Ends – This single-night tour through the Laurel Hill Cemetery explores famous last wishes, dying words, and crazy causes of death that make the truth sound stranger than fiction. A $20 ticket grants you admittance to the guided tour, plus wine, beer, and refreshments, but make sure to bring your own flashlight! Not recommended for anyone under 21.
  • Career Transition Workshop – For those over the age of 50 and looking to make big changes to  their careers, JEVS Human Resources in Rittenhouse is hosting a three-part workshop series on making the transition, Tuesdays from 10 am to noon. Wednesday, October 9th

  • PopUp Place – The 2013 DesignPhiladelphia Festival kicks off with a cocktail party and benefit from 6 to 9. The party takes place in bahdeebahdu, a multidisciplinary working studio for custom furniture and product designs, with an After Party going in an industrial space right down the street from 9 to midnight, with entertainment by King Britt.
  • Dita Von Teese Variety Show – America’s favorite burlesque dancer performs “Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray!” show at the Tower Theater at 7:30 pm. Tickets run from $20 to $150.
  • Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club – This 13-piece band of legendary Cuban performers began in the golden era of the 1940s and 50s. Their performance at the Merriam Theater reunites several Buena Vista Social Club alumni in a special one-night engagement from $37-65.

Thursday, October 10th

  • Skinny Bitch: NOT a Stand-Up Comedy Show – Playing from the 10th through 27th, Lisa Lampanelli addresses her personality behind her comedy business facade, and her struggles with men, food, and body image in a startling touching and hilariously relatable one-woman show.
  • Philly Magic Gardens Date Night – New date added due to popular demand! Visit the PMG with a glass of complimentary wine, hand-in-hand with your special someone for a unique tour of the gardens lit by candelight. Tours are an hour long, priced at $15 for non-members; reservations are required.

Friday, October 11th

  • Pulitzer Prize Photographs Grand Opening – The National Constitution Center’s newest exhibit features the history of Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 9:30 am on Friday, and special educational programs will be occurring throughout the weekend.
  • The Winner’s Circle – Philadelphia’s rising stars of R&B come together for performances from 9 pm to 2 am at Sigma Sound. Lineup includes MPyrnt, Guordan Banks, Jeremy Isaac, and Leah Smith.
  • * 2013 U.S. Open Squash Championships – Drexel University hosts the United States’ most prestigious tournament with the country’s top players in the sport of squash. Game tickets run from $20 to $115, and the championships go through the 9th to the 18th.

Saturday, October 12th

  • Reading Terminal Market Harvest Fest – For it’s 13th annual festival, enjoy free admission and activities in the market including hay rides, a pumpkin patch, tractor rides, live music, arts and crafts and games. Food will, of course, be available for purchase! From 10 am to 4 pm.
  • Sister Cities Park Fall Family Fun Days – Each Saturday in October, Sister Cities is hosting family fun from 11 am to 2 pm in the form of music, activities, seasonal decorations to enjoy, and food and drink offerings, plus an exhibition of the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation after-school program’s Scarecrow Festival. This week, enjoy music from Noggin Hill Band, a fire truck visit from the Philadelphia Fire Department, dinosaur fun with the Academy of Natural Science, and a craft activity from University City Arts League.
  • Saved by the 90s – New York City’s party band The Bayside Tigers bring the noise like it’s 1999. Join other 90’s babies at the Trocadero for this blast from the past celebration, $11-13 for 21+.

Sunday, October 13th

  • Global Puppy PopUp – Philly PR Girl and Global Philly 2013 will be joined by global Philadelphians and their pooches from 9-11 am at the Schuylkill River Dog Park at 2500 Lombard. Members of the Red Paw Emergency Relief team will be in attendance, and the dog with the best international costume wins a prize!
  • Elephant Room – FringeArts’ first non-festival show at their new headquarters on the Waterfront is a three-man magic act which delves into the secret society behind professional magic performance. Playing from October 10-20 for $49 general admission tickets and $20 for students and individuals age 25 and under with ID.
  • Old City Seaport Festival – The Independence Seaport Museum’s second annual festival is ongoing through the weekend, with Tall Ships, boat races, live music, crafts, vendors, and a pirate lair for kids outside the museum at Penn’s Landing. Meanwhile, adults can enjoy the outdoor beer garden and food trucks which will be stationed there. Tickets required will gain visitors access to the festival, admission to the museum, the ships, and deck tours.
