Here’s whats going on this week…

Monday, September 30th

  • A Conversation with Jhumpa Lahiri – Lahiri was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her debut collection of stories, Interpreter of Maladies, in 2000. At the Free Library of Philadelphia, she will discuss her second novel, The Lowland, and topics of interest that have been touched upon in her other story collections, Unaccustomed Earth and The Namesake, which gracefully navigate identity, cultural assimilation and the immigrant experience. Tickets are $32.

Tuesday, October 1st

  • Wilma Theater’s 40th Anniversary – Celebrate 40 years of contemporary theater at the Wilma’s open house party from 6 to 8 pm. Free food and drinks will be offered, alongside a performance by The Bearded Ladies Cabaret, a meet and greet with the actors of CONVERT, a sneak peak of the set and video clips from the last 40 years. RSVP for a free drink wristband.
  • Love, Loss and the 1960s – A double bill performance at The Adrienne Theatre features two shows by White Pines Productions. The Music You Remember is a one-man, multi-media spectacle featuring popular music from the 60s, which acts as a cautionary tale in the dangers of dwelling in your past. Luckiest Kid explores relationships, sexual identity, and traditions of Greek theater.

Wednesday, October 2nd

  • Cocktails and the Constitution – Chris Stigall from WPHT 1210 joins National Constitution Center President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen in conversation on today’s most pressing constitutional issues. Event is free with cash bar and begins at 6 pm.
  • Evil Dead The Musical – Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic horror film is adapted into a hilarious live action theater experience at the Prince Music Theater. Playing through the 20th, tickets are $25-65. Parental discretion is advised.
  • Top Chef Season 11 premiere – Philadelphia is shown double the love during Bravo’s next season of Top Chef, when Nicholas Elmi (Le Bec-Fin, Rittenhouse Tavern) and Jason Cichonski (Ela Restaurant, Rittenhouse Hotel) take to the kitchen in New Orleans to fight for the winning title. Airing at 10 pm ET/PT.

Thursday, October 3rd

  • Musicopia Happy Hour – Indulge in drinks at Pagano’s Market and Bar from 5:30 to 7:30 pm to help raise money for Musicopia, a nonprofit that assists in musical education programs for over 40,000 students throughout the Delaware Valley.
  • Night Market Chinatown – The fall Night Market with Philly’s favorite food trucks and participating restaurants takes place at 10th and Race streets in Chinatown from 7 to 11 pm.

Friday, October 4th – Happy First Friday!

  • Spooky Mini Golf – From 6 to 9 pm, get in the spirit of the season at Franklin Square with a game of mini golf, complete with fog, lights, music and surprises. $9 for adults and $7 for children ages 3-12.
  • A PYNK Affair – Yards Brewing Company and Baby’s Little Ice Cream and Spot Burger are collaborating in a delicious event in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with a new tart berry ale, sweet berry ice cream made with Yards’ brew, and Spot’s burgers and sandwiches served between pink buns. Tickets are $10, all proceeds benefit the Tyanna Foundation & Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania.
  • * Penn Museum International Student Reception – Celebrating its 44th anniversary, this welcome reception is free and open to international students and scholars as part of the Global Philly 2013 exposition. Meet others in the region and learn about resources for multicultural education, while enjoying performances by different arts groups, listed here.
  • Fly School Circus Arts announces the opening of Philadelphia’s first flying trapeze school with: Flying Fall Fest!  They are hosting events all weekend.
  • Pretty Pretty Rebel Trunk Show at Smak Parlour (218 Market St) – 5pm

Saturday, October 5th

  • Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes – This 5k presented by Independence Blue Cross starts at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and leads walkers along the sunny banks of the Schuylkill River. There will be a Health and Wellness Festival with diabetes information, a Kids Zone and plenty of family friendly activities afterwards.
  • Fishtown RiverCity Festival – From 12 to 5 pm, gather at the Penn Treaty Park on the waterfront for family fun activities, live entertainment, and food and beverages from local vendors. Highlights will include Philadelphia Zoo-on-Wheels, hula hoop artists, derby races with the Boy Scouts of America, brews from Philadelphia Brewing Company, and a set by Cheers Elephant.
  • Revolve: Art and Social Change Symposium – The Leeway Foundation hosts a full day  event with keynote presentation, three plenary sessions, and pop-up performances, including “Claiming Space: Community to Museum”, “Embedded in Community: What Is Social Practice?” and “Hybridism: Artists as Activists”. The event is free, but RSVPs are required.
  • Locust Moon Comics Festival – Peruse comic book issues old and new at the Rotunda from 10 to 6 pm. This year’s fest boasts an impressive guest list of creators and graphic artists, including Jim Steranko, Chrissie Zullo, Toby Cypress and the gang from Meathaus. Admittance is donation-based, and proceeds will benefit the construction of the Jack Kirby Museum in Hoboken, NJ.

Sunday, October 6th

  • Midtown Village Fall Festival – Eight full blocks will be filled with the smells and tastes of the fall season, featuring arts and crafts, live music, and more from 12 to 8 pm!
  • Philly Mag Shops – Philadelphia’s ultimate shopping event features over 30 shops and boutiques’ merchandise in a warehouse-style shopping excursion from 12 to 4 pm at the Crane Arts Building, with sales up to 40%. Tickets are $25 and include cocktails and snacks, gift bags, access to nail art, a braid bar, smokey eyes section, and a group discount of buy 3, get 1 half off.
  • Writers Block Party – Come and see the brand new Mighty Writers at 36th and Lancaster, a group dedicated to promoting reading amongst youth. Meet the team and learn about their programs for kids ages 7-17.
  • Homebrewing Class – Learn the history, ingredients, and process of home brewing from start to finish with brewmasters Garrett Williams and Meredith Rebar from Home Brewed Events. Each participant will help to brew a 5 gallon batch on the roof deck at 3rd Ward, and after a month, can select 2 specialty bottles to imbibe in!
