Monday, May 13th

  • Jumpstart Showcase – The Fringearts’ annual showcase of new and emerging talent in live performance runs on the 13th and 14th. Tickets are $18 at the Painted Bride Art Center, and $12 for students and persons under 25.
  • 2013 Snail of Approval event – Started in 2011, Slow Food Philadelphia awards the Snail of Approval to an exclusive group of outstanding restaurants, food and beverage artisans, farmers, and markets that prioritize quality, sustainability, and authenticity in their practices. Be there for a casual evening at the Reading Terminal Market for tasting and samplings of food and drink, demonstrations and info sessions, products for purchase, and live music.

Tuesday, May 14th

  • Ides of March: Making a Masterpiece – On display now through May 27th, Andrew Wyeth’s exhibit at the Brandywine River Museum is a focused study on one of the artist’s most famous tempera paintings, Ides of March.
  • Bo Burnham presents “what.” a new live comedy show thing – Three years ago, Bo Burnham was just another high-schooler recording YouTube videos for fun. Today, Burnham has burst on the comedy scene with a full-length LP, a Comedy Central special and a deal to write a film for Judd Apatow.  Check here for tickets ($30) and more information on Keswick Theatre, the Glenside venue where Burnham will be performing at 8 pm.

Wednesday, May 15th

  • Wedge + Fig Social Club – It’s only $10 in advance or $15 at the door to take part in a seasonal cheese tasting and night of great conversation at the Wedge + Fig. The event is BYO; check their website for more information.
  • The Community Curators Program at Asian Arts Initiative programmed this year’s Art Education Annual Exhibit, “We Are All”. Featuring pieces by the students of the city’s Mural Arts program, the free exhibition is open to the public through June 7th.
  • Philadelphia Open House: Wanamaker Tour – The Wanamaker Grand Organ at Macy’s has been thrilling shoppers every business day since 1911. Built for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, the organ has more than 28,000 pipes, which reach up to 32 feet long and are located throughout the building – all controlled by the organist using six keyboards and 729 controls. Tickets are $20 per person, and following the tour, guests get a listen at the regularly scheduled organ concert.

Thursday, May 16th

  • Fairmount Night Market – Philadelphia’s favorite – and most populated – street food festival returns from 6 to 10 pm at 22nd and Fairmount Ave. Eats can be washed down with Yards’ beers, Eastern State Penitentiary will provide a backdrop of artwork, and music will be provided by The Downtown Club, George Urgo, Mudslide, and Johnny Showcase and the Lefty Lucy Cabaret. Oh, and there will be a circus!
  • West Elm Opening @ KOP – Home furnishing retailer West Elm is opening a location at the King of Prussia Mall on Thursday at 10 am. Come out and receive 20% off of outdoor furniture, textiles, and a gardening assortment. The first 300 shoppers will receive a free West Elm King of Prussia tote bag designed by local artist Jim Digiovanni with a minimum purchase of $50.
  • The Porch at 30th Street Beer Garden – The Bridgewater Pub at 30th Street Station will relocate outdoors to The Porch on May 16th and 17th for the first of two scheduled pop-up beer gardens.

Friday, May 17th

  • Tim McGraw at the Sysquehanna Bank Center
  • Philly’s own Kuf Knotz at the Trocadero with Cheers Elephant  and Hoots & Hellmouth!
  • Opening Reception of The Making of a Modern Man – Inliquid presents a solo exhibit featuring artist John Y. Wind, whose installations and assemblage sculptures are deeply personal reflections on desire and the commercial nature of everyday life. His work also explores the fetishized nature of glamour and the stark carnal aspects of our culture in collages that layer celebrities, porn stars, and luxury brands. The exhibit’s opening reception is at the James Oliver Gallery (723 Chestnut St) from 6 to 10 pm.
  • “It’s My Party: The Women and Comedy Project” – 1812 Productions’ current show, closing on Sunday, is the culmination of two years of research, a dozen workshops, and nearly a hundred interviews with women from all walks of life, aiming to explore and expose the role of comedy in women’s lives. This hilarious extravaganza features seven of Philadelphia’s funniest actresses and a script by Jennifer Childs in a one-of-a-kind theatrical event.

Saturday, May 18th

  • Preakness at the Piazza – We’ve been keeping you updated on Philly’s biggest party of the Spring, and it’s finally come! Purchase your tickets and don those wide-brimmed hats and bowties, because the Piazza at Schmidt’s is taking you to the Preakness horse race. This young professionals event goes from 5 to 9 pm and benefits the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
  • New Hope Pride – The main event of New Hope Pride’s 10th Anniversary Pride Celebration peaks with a parade and festival on Saturday. This block party and vendor fair includes a culmination of shopping, history, dining, live music, dancing, theater, and arts. Download the app New Hope Pride for updates and times.
  • Brewerytown Spring Festival – From noon to 5 pm, the annual Brewerytown Spring Festival will transform the 2700 to 2800 blocks of West Girard Avenue into a colorful and tasty street festival celebrating art, food and music. The event will include live music, specials from local businesses, 15 to 20 unique food trucks from the Philadelphia Mobile Food Association (PMFA), kids’ activities, AND talented arts and crafts vendors.

Sunday, May 19th

  • The Killers at Susquehanna Bank Center
  • Yoga on the steps of the Art Museum starting at 8:30 with Living Beyond Breast Cancer
  • The Punk Rock Flea Market (Day 2!) – R5 Productions’ legendary flea market is now a two-day event, open with an easy $3 admission at 461 N 9th Street on Saturday and Sunday. Over 500 vendors will be selling old records, clothes, posters, instruments, food, equipment, skateboards, and more!
  • Eagles Academy for Men – On Saturday or Sunday, Eagles fans (at least, men ages 18 and older with $90 to spare) will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of football from Eagles coaches, players and alumni in the classroom setting then put their skills and knowledge to the test on the practice field with current Eagles players. The day will start at 9:30 am with a keynote, followed by classroom lessons and on-field drills through 3 pm. Eagles Academy will also include lunch in the team cafeteria and a gift bag, featuring a commemorative certificate and an autographed item.
  • Player One at Barcade – Northern Liberties’ retro arcade bar hosts an afternoon (1 to 6 pm) filled with board/card/RPG/arcade games, plus a new look at designer Trick Clapp’s latest parsley game. And did we mention $1 off all drafts?
