Here’s whats going on this week…

Monday, April 8th

  • The Butterfly Project – More than 15,000 children passed through Terezin Concentration Camp during the Holocaust; less than 100 survived. Children from Wolf Performing Arts Center will bring to life the voices, the words, and the art of these children who were silenced during the Holocaust on April 8 and 9 at The Kimmel Center.
  • Theaster Gates: Soul Manufacturing Corporation — To Make the Thing that Makes the Things – Theaster Gates will create a “thing-making” facility and gathering place for Greater Philadelphia’s artists, local and international makers to work with Soul Manufacturing’s core team to produce clay-, wood-, and textile-based objects.
  • Grilled Cheese and Craft Beer – Fun fact: April is National Grilled Cheese Month! To celebrate, the World Cafe Live is hosting a number of Grilled Cheese and Craft Beer nights featuring some of Philly’s favorite brewing companies and locally sourced breads and cheeses. On Monday, Victory Brewing Company supplies the suds.

Tuesday, April 9th

  • Dollar Dog Night – Enjoy this week’s bout of summer weather out at the park! The Phils play the Mets at 7:05.
  • Building Philadelphia: Romantic Philadelphia – Third in a 10-part series, this lecture is hosted by Richard Webster, PhD, and Professor Emeritus at West Chester University. From 6-8 pm, Webster explores the architectural styles of Philadelphia that were popular after the “colonial” era, but before the Victorian era.
  • A Conversation with Robert Grenier and Stephen Ratcliffe – These acclaimed poets will be speaking at 6 pm in the Arts Cafe at UPenn as part of the Kelly Writer’s House monthly programming.

Wednesday, April 10th

  • Work from University of the Arts students, faculty and alumni goes on sale at this year’s Art Unleashed, open April 10-13. The event – which will feature everything from furniture and illustrations to jewelry, photography and ceramics – helps to raise money to support the University’s Sam S. McKeel Promising Young Artists Scholarship Fund.
  • Sincere Connections – Don’t run away from the speed date – it is optional! Instead, come for the 30 different kinds of martinis and hosts, Sincerely Syreeta and Kevin Carr.

Thursday, April 11th

  • XPN Music Film Festival – Presented by WXPN and the Philadelphia Film Society, the 2013 Music Film Festival runs from April 11-14. It is Philly’s first festival solely dedicated to films about music, featuring rockumentaries, biopics about musicians, and movies that are defined by their music soundtracks, spanning a variety of music genres.
  • State Store No More? Pennsylvania, Liquor, and the Law – A timely town hall discussion at the National Constitution Center.
  • Closing Reception for “UrbanPop: Betsy Meyers Memorial Exhibition” – Featuring artists Leslie Friedman, DISTORT, and Jay Walker, find out about the Main Line Art Center’s Urban Pop exhibition here.

Friday, April 12th

  • Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev – Composed in the final days of World War II, Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony is marked by the optimism of impending victory; Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence is inspired by his infatuation with the sights and sounds of Italy. These works will be performed in an expanded version for the full strings of The Philadelphia Orchestra on the 12th and 13th.

Saturday, April 13th

  • East Passyunk Avenue’s Second Saturday  – Visit what is now one of the “10 best foodie streets in America” by Food & Wine Magazine.  Click here for more info about Second Saturday!
  • Manayunk STREAT Food Festival – From 11am – 5pm on Main Street check out Philly’s best food tucks!
  • Philly Spring Cleanup 2013 – Choose a neighborhood and do your part! Register yourself and a few friends to lend a hand between 9 and 2.
  • The Bayside Tigers at The Troc – New York City’s own 90s Party Band! Reviving your favorites from Grunge to Boy Band to Alternative to Hip-Hop, The Bayside Tigers are a time machine to an era of economic boom, flannel shirts, and Boy Meets World.
  • The 52nd Philadelphia Antiques Show – Expanded by popular demand from April 13-15.
  • Walk & Run Against Hunger – Hosted by The Coalition Against Hunger, this 5k on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive supports more than 100 food pantries, soup kitchens and hunger-relief agencies in Southeastern Pennsylvania and South Jersey.
  • Philly Roller Derby – Cheer on the Independence Dolls and Philly Block Party roller derby home teams as they take on Suburban Brawl (Yonkers, NY) and Salisbury Rollergirl All-Stars (Salisbury, MD).

Sunday, April 14th

  • Sakura Sunday – The centerpiece event of the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival hosts a full day of activities at the Fairmount Park Horticultural Center, including Tamagawa Taiko Drum and dance group performances, martial arts demos, origami, calligraphy, Harajuku Fashion Show, Japanese food/product vendors, and the Prettiest Pet in Pink Parade.
  • Philadelphia Book Festival – Running from the 14th through the 20th at every library location in the city!
  • The 2013 Philly Farm & Food Fest – It’s part education and part community support for the people who produce our food… and 100% delicious fun!
  • Together for Raquel – Mamada Beauty Bazaar hosts a day of inner and outer beauty in Raquel’s benefit. (click the link to learn more)  Light appetizers, music, drinks, chair massages, makeovers and lots of surprises for the kids and the whole family!
