Stomp the Runway: Philadelphia’s Premiere Fashion Gala

Feathers, leather, big hair, vivid prints and patterns and chains paired with bold colors, fierce attitudes and walks were just a few staple items seen Friday at “Stomp the Runway” Against Domestic Abuse. Guests gathered at TRUST, home of MTV’s “Real World” Philadelphia located in Old City, for an evening of advocacy with fashion and style.

Inspired by the death of local rising model, Vanessa “Ms. Banks” Watson, this premiere fashion event faced the issue of domestic violence in the Philadelphia community head on. Essence best-selling author, Brenda L. Thomas (Laying My Burdens Down), gave a powerfully moving account of her experiences dealing with domestic violence and the importance of seeking and supporting life-saving services.

Hosted by 100.3 WRNB’s Moshay Laren (@MoShayLaRen) and FOX 29’s entertainment reporter and radio personality Kendra G (@KendraGRadio), this cosmopolitan runway show featured local award-winning couture designer, Autumn Kietpongler.

Presented by Rashad Corey Productions, the evening began with a greeting from models wearing pieces from designer Carmelita Couture and the sounds of DJ Hollywood (@mrhollywooddj). Guests lounged and mingled among the sleek and elegant décor while enjoying tasty hors d’oeuveres. and signature cocktails. Others checked out items from Neko Nicole, Philly Minx, Spa East, 5-Hour Energy drink, Tower of Jewels; walked the beautiful, custom-made purple carpet, or visited the glam bar – sponsored by Philly Minx, Darci by DiCaprio, Spa East, Kia Sterling and Rodney Jon.

As the lights dimmed models wearing stunning designs by Carmelita Couture, Bishme Cromartie, Faithful by Michael Thomas, Jacqueline Myles for Todd Anthony Clothing, Shooney Frederic, Untamed by Kia Denise came alive. Flashing lights from cameras at the end of the catwalk caught their every move.

Proceeds from the event benefited Women Against Abuse, Inc., and the Watson Family. Women Against Abuse is the only nonprofit organization in Philadelphia that provides limited shelter services but is currently at risk in State budget, thus the organization has been forced to deny approximately 7,000+ shelter requests since 2008.  The event was not only a success, but inspiring!
